- Knowing your credit score and what's on your credit report can help you determine what products to apply for. If you have fair credit, for example, you may not want to apply for a card that clearly states that only applicants with excellent credit will be approved.
- If you don't have good credit, you may find it difficult to get approved for a card with a large sign-up bonus and a lucrative reward structure. Each credit card application ends up on your credit report, so the Nerds recommend using our credit cards comparison tool to find a card that fits your credit profile before applying.
- If the card allows balance transfers, you may request to have balances transferred from other credit card accounts to the new card.
- To apply for a credit card in the US, you’ll need a valid Social Security number and a positive credit history. The best rewards credit cards may require at least three to five years of good credit history, and some more than seven.

Zero Stars. LL Bean Citibank withdrew $ 7,555 out of my bank account and wouldn't give the money back. I only owed them $ 3700. They duplicated my payment to no fault of my own. My checking account was beyond empty and Overdraft Protection had to be employed. I had to dip into my savings to try to cover this horrible mess. This was entirely the fault of Citibank. No matter how many times I called, no one acknowledged this significant error nor did they fix the problem. They owed me a refund of $3777.92. I received partial refund of $580. I contacted LL.Bean on multiple occasions, via phone and email, and they did nothing to fix this problem. When I was forced to close my account because they wouldn't refund me, Citi deleted some of my rewards! Really?!! I earned those rewards and none of this was my fault I was a customer for decades . . . not anymore. This was a fatal error on the part of LL Bean Citibank. Good Riddance! (Account 4985)
"we had LLBean card for 10+ years. Since Citi has taken over we can no longer travel or buy things without getting denied due to fraud alert. We have called them and gave them our travel schedule but with every purchase it is denied followed by a txt message 2 minutes later asking if you were trying to purchase something. By then we used another card and walked out the door. Security & Fraud is so good you can't use the card.
"Long term customer of LL Bean. Since switch to citi, and the multitude of problems with that bank, when I never before had problems, bye bye ll bean. Too many other customer focused banks and clothing options out there. Don't need the continued hassle and agrivation.
"The incompetence and arrogance of the representative at Citibank was unusually annoying. A Citibank employee who refused to provide his name or city location, willing to identify himself only as Ryan in Maryland, a representative of the management team, employee number 1RR, informed me that nothing could be done to correct a technical problem which prevented my purchase. He advised me that no one could correct it, and I could speak to no one else at the bank.
"The LL Bean transition to mastercard is a terrible step down. Sure, you get Bean Bucks that roll over, but the Citi bank service is terrible and they fraud detection is overly cautious -- shutting down your card regularly if you use it more than a few times. For more than a decade it was my only card, but now I'm forced to get something more user friendly.
